Jones, Rebecca (Grade 1)

Thank all of you for coming out to our open house!  We had 100% participation and I really appreciate the time you took to let us get to know your precious child.

Thank you to all the parents who have signed up for class Dojo.  This will be the best way to stay in contact with me and the things going on in the classroom. The students who are using it in other school love it!  You can ask me questions or send me information during the day using your smart phone or ipad.  It is a  great form of communication

We will be using Accelerated reader this year.  The students have loved this program in the past and is a great way to improve reading fluency and comprehension. Another program we will be using is Classworks.  It combines data from Star Reading and Star Math tests and creates games and activities for the students to use in the computer lab.

I believe that listening to your child read is one of the most important things you can do to help them be successful.  Modeling reading to your child lets them know you value learning.

In math we are working on adding and subtracting sums within 20.  Please review math facts at home as often as possible.  Flash cards work well--the math fact quizzes are timed so memorizing the facts is better than allowing them to use their fingers.  They will also need to have mastery of the facts as they progress into multiplication and division.  It is much easier on them if they learn them at an earlier age.
We are also working on fact families, even/odd number, numbers to 100, place value, doubles, base ten, and < & >.

The students will have spelling words each week.  Please work with your child at home in order to ensure they are successful on their test on Fridays.

In science we will begin with skeletons, endoskeletons and exoskeletons--building strong bones--importance of exercise and healthy food choices.  We will try different foods (mostly fruits) with the idea that you may or may not like it but you wont really know unless you try.  Please let me know of any food allergies. We will also begin using magnifying glasses and tweezers to examine a cicada exoskeleton and compare and contrast the endo and exo.

Reading is a major focus of our day and we will work  on different genres such as personal narratives and fiction versus non-fiction.  The students will identify the different parts of a story-Title, Author, Illustrator, Characters, Setting, beginning, middle, end and when applicable the  problem and solution of the story.  The students will learn the differences between facts and opinions and how to use them in their writing.  In addition to the Who, What, When, Where, Why and How of a story the students will evaluate writing and determine such things as "What does the author want us to understand about the story" or "How does this story make you feel and why"?

We have a field trip scheduled for Friday October 17 to Hubs Farm in Clinton.  You are welcome to meet us there and enjoy the day with your child.
